READER'S REPORT

reader's
                        report

A reader's report on the author's finished draft is absolutely recommended as a writing project moves towards publication. Even taking the greatest care, the writer is unlikely to perceive their text with the objectivity required for final re-writing and polishing. A professional reader will read the entire submission, whether extract or complete manuscript, and seek to place and evaluate it within its genre and likely market. They will also provide detailed analysis and remarks in key areas such as plot, structure, characterization and style. Comments will always be constructive and typically encourage the writer towards a planned and purposeful revision and improvement of the text.

Various levels of analysis and reporting are available. Fees are usually based on the manuscript word-count, with a flat fee up to a certain number of words, with additional costs pro rata thereafter. To the word-count fee will be added a cost for the type and depth of reading and analysis offered. Detailed proof-reading, requiring both time and high-order skills, is comparatively costly; however, most successful independent writer-publishers will say that third-party proof-reading - error-spotting of all kinds - is indispensable to a project's successful conclusion. That being accepted, a reader's report should never in normal circumstances be intimidatingly expensive. Shop around.
